Last night, I attended the premier Downtown LA Fashion Week show titled An Evening of 20th Century Glamour which benefited the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. Along with an amazing array of vintage gowns from vintage clothing darling Cameron Silver's, Decades (more on this tomorrow), Louis Verdad showed his newest collection titled Louver. If anyone has ever questioned LA's fashion scene, last night's show would have made their jaws drop.

‘Good Boy’ Marc Jacobs Offers Bad Girl Looks for Vuitton» view comments

Marc Jacobs must henceforth be known as the Good Boy of fashion. He eats healthily, exercises, and starts his shows promptly on time — after years of less-than-healthy living and severe tardiness.
For the record, his show for Louis Vuitton, scheduled for 2:30 today, started at 2:37 pm. Though technically seven minutes late, it is in reality at least 23 minutes early, according to the way most fashion-show attendees calculate their schedules. Hence guests scrambled to their seats as the first models stepped on to the runway.
Derelicte Is Upon Us, Courtesy of Alexander McQueen» view comments

The runway at Alexander McQueen's show in Paris yesterday snaked around a heap of trash. The garbage motif carried over to the styling: Models' heads were affixed with cans, wrapped in Saran Wrap, or served as balances for wheel rims and what looked like deranged manhole covers. And the nylon of one black dress was made to look like black garbage bags. So it only took Mugatu's Derelicte collection from Zoolander eight years to transcend the cinematic world of make-believe. Which brings us a great sense of inner peace.
Paris Fashion Week: Stella McCartney F/W 09» view comments
This season, Stella McCartney triumphantly left any spillover influence her collaborations with Adidas have had on her work behind and went back to her roots. The British designer produced the loosely tailored, but structured and slightly androgynous suits and slip dresses that have long been one of her strongest points.
Paris Fashion Week: Manish Arora» view comments
Manish Arora continues to attract a growing audience at his circus-like runway shows, but yesterday’s sublime presentation will serve to further secure his place at the table of fashion’s fiercest visionaries.
Trendspotting Paris: Intergalactic Chic» view comments

Some of the most forward-thinking designers in Paris are casting a wistful backward glance at the swashbuckling universe of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. Their collections, costume extravaganzas , actually - are filled with telling references to the kind of mid-20th century sci-fi futurism that had its genesis in the depression years. Models tricked out like astral voyagers in metallic jumpsuits and moon boots are suited up heroically for uncertain times ahead

Gareth Pugh Skips Runway For Video Presentation of Fall 2009 Collection» view comments
This season, the big secret was what Gareth Pugh was going to show - or rather, how. Rumblings had emerged beforehand that Pugh's presentation would be a 'show' without the catwalk - namely that he was another designer making a brave foray into fashion film.
Milan Fashion Week: Optimism In Perspective» view comments

As Milan Fashion Week drew to a close, designers paid not-so-subtle tribute to style idols past and present. Perhaps it's just a statement of the times, but the resounding emphasis on historical perspective seemed to offer an optimistic reassurance for a struggling global economy.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week Trend: Watercolor Prints» view comments

Watercolor Prints at United Bamboo, Jeremy Laing, and Lela Rose.
Style tip? Now here’s a pretty sub-trend that feels more Spring than Fall. Watercolor-like prints are a feminine twist on the broader Bold Prints trend. Because they’re so dramatic, we recommend making them the focal point of your outfit. They’re simply lovely on dresses, as seen at United Bamboo, Jeremy Laing, and Lela Rose.
Christian Siriano’s Egyptian Runway Lures Retail Execs» view comments

Last season, Mr. Siriano showed his first collection, which got favorable reviews but not much traction at retail. This season’s front row was dotted with retail executives, including Saks Fifth Avenue’s president Ron Frasch and EVP and general merchandise manager Joe Boitano. (Saks’ former fashion director Michael Fink, who was an early supporter of Mr. Siriano, also sat in the front row.) Buyers from Bloomingdales, Macy’s and Holt Renfrew were also in attendance.
Alexandre Herchcovitch: Playing with Chaos» view comments

“I don’t like this thing designers do of putting images up on a board,” Mr. Herchcovitch said Wednesday before his show in Bryant Park. He was referring to the industry practice of assembling “mood boards” to which are tacked swatches, postcards, tear sheets and anything else that suits a seasonal theme or provides a creative jolt.
Anna Wintour Applauds the Downsizing of Fashion Week» view comments

“I think a certain amount of winnowing out of who’s going to be on the runway and who’s not is not at all a bad thing,” Wintour continued. “Last season we had so many complaints because it was just back-to-back shows, and to be honest, people that shouldn’t be doing it … it’s much better to see them in the showroom or more of a low-key presentation. It’s more realistic.”

General Idea ranks high with unconvential men's looks» view comments

In a minimalist setting a mere block from the Intrepid along the West Side Highway, the focus was on Korean menswear label General Idea's topsy-turvied masculine basics. The palette never veered from black, charcoal, and gray—so it was construction and attention to provocative details that brought real punch to the pieces.
