Hartmarx Corp., the Chicago parent of prominent apparel brands like Hart Schaffner Marx, Hickey-Freeman and many others, said late on Friday that it filed to reorganize under Chapter 11 of federal bankruptcy law.
In a statement, Hartmarx cited "the substantial decline in discretionary apparel purchases by consumers and by the company's retail customers, particularly at the luxury price points, coupled with a significant contraction in borrowing capacity under the company's senior credit facility."
